Today, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas designated Ukraine for Temporary Protection Status (TPS) for 18 months. The Biden administration made the right decision by designating Ukraine for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Ukrainians eligible for TPS under this designation must have continuously resided in the United States since March 1, 2022. Ukrainians who attempt to travel to the United States after March 1, 2022, will not be eligible for TPS.
TPS is a temporary immigration status given by the United States government to eligible nationals of designated countries, such as Ukraine, as determined by the Secretary of Homeland Security, who are present in the United States and meet certain requirements. TPS permits individuals to work and travel so long as they remain in valid TPS status and seek permission from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in advance.
